Rationale for Action:
Long-term care nursing homes in Ontario are required by law to immediately report suspected abuse or neglect cases to the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. Once a report is sent, the Ministry investigates, and determines if it turns out to be substantiated. MHLTC’s definition of abuse includes physical, sexual, verbal and emotional abuse. Critical incidents reports are considered public records. But because they are not published or posted anywhere on nursing home websites – or even the government’s website – family members would have to obtain them through the Freedom of Information Act. This is UNACCEPTABLE!
We ask the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care to publish CRITICAL INCIDENT REPORTS of abuse and neglect of seniors by staff and residents as they are reported to them and to post, sadly, a scorecard of all incidents reported per facility for all LTC facilities in Ontario on the Ministry’s website.
